Rust

This work explores the tones and textures of rust through a printmaking process that mirrors the material qualities of metal itself. Using a combination of intaglio and relief techniques, translucent and opaque inks are layered to build a surface that is visually rich and physically resonant. The many plates were made slowly, over hours of etching and stopping out, with each stage embedding new layers of information into the copper matrix. This cumulative process reflects the way rust forms—through time, exposure, and transformation. The resulting image, printed on soft, delicate paper, creates a subtle trompe l’oeil effect: a surface that appears corroded and tactile, yet is entirely constructed through ink. Sitting between representation and abstraction, the work invites close inspection, blurring the boundary between material and image.
